Reading For Fun

I am not a person who can remember reading for fun ever. I was not a good reader, so I had to take a longer time when I would read. Unlike most children when I would read a book, it would be hard to remember the storyline. I can remember my mother reading to me each night. She would allow me to pick out the book, however,  I was wanted to read a book, so I would just cry instead of picking out the book. It was the same issue when I went to school, I never wanted to read in front of the class. I can remember crying during reading class and my parents had to come to school to pick me up that day.
One day when I was given a big red dog, yes- Clifford the big red dog was the best day ever! My mom had gotten me this stuffed animal from the school during a book fair. She wanted me to hold on to him while I was reading; it was the best decision she could have made. I was completely happy when ever I had The Big Red Dog!

  2. We all struggle with one subject or other. I can say I hate to read but I do procrastinate when it come to reading, especially for school. I work with challenging students who hate to read or can't read. I usually give them these fake eyeglasses, I called them the "magic readers". I tell the students that they give them power when they put them. Everyone can read with these magic readers. They put them on and I can see them try to read as they pronounce each letter. I than act surprise and say, "Was that you reading or did someone helped you." That smile says it all, I just want them to feel motivated that they can read if they set their minds to it.

    1. That's such a great tool to motivate them. Reading can be a hard thing to get adjusted to of you just can't do it. Thanks for helping those students!

  3. Norma,
Your mother reminds me of my own; she was always reading to me, and pushing me to read. I love hearing (in this case reading) stories about moms and the measures they take to assist their children in learning. The story you shared about Clifford, is a very beautiful one; your mom was smart for using the stuffed animal to engage you in reading. Such a wonderful story!
    Thanks for sharing!
